Before serving as principal health policy advisor to a key member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Ms. Van Meter was an associate at a prominent Pittsburgh law firm, where she litigated cases involving health care and insurance coverage.
As Legislative Counsel to U.S. Rep. Melissa Hart (PA), Ms. Van Meter was the Congresswoman’s principal legislative and policy advisor on matters as diverse as Medicare and Medicaid, medical liability and funding for medical research, and the implementation of the expansion of Medicare to cover the cost of prescription drugs (Medicare Part D).
While working as Legislative Counsel to U.S. Rep. Melissa Hart, Ms. Van Meter was responsible for Judiciary Committee issues, including immigration, intellectual property, and Constitutional matters. Ms. Van Meter was also responsible for the Congresswoman’s Human Resources Ways & Means Subcommittee assignment issues, which included Welfare policy, adoption and foster care policy, and a variety of other social issues.
Before beginning her legislative career in Washington, Ms. Van Meter was an associate at Thorp, Reed & Armstrong, LLP, where she litigated a variety of matters including insurance practices, fraud, consumer protection and allegations of bad faith and breach of contract. She was also an associate in the Environment, Land Use and Construction Litigation.
A graduate, cum laude, of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with minors in History and Psychology, she is an acknowledged contributor to Wettick on Discovery, 2002, a respected treatise on Pennsylvania civil discovery. She also co-authored the section on Settlements in the 2003 Allegany County Court of Common Pleas Practice Manual.
